| Beginning of the end begins today | | Opposition up in arms, govt. chalks strategy | | Early Times Reporter Jammu | Jan 6 With all storms, heat and dust the most noisy and interesting session of the state legislature begins here tomorrow. The session beginning Monday is an advanced budget session and last sitting of the present assembly as the state goes to elections later this year. The 21-day session is likely to be most stormy and noisy primarily for the reason that duration of the session has been kept shortest ever. According to the legislative precedence the state legislature should remain in session for at least 100 days every year. The autumn session in the state last year for just around one week and the present budget session has been cut short to just 21 days. The opposition National Conference, Panthers Party and other independent legislators are all set to corner the government on short duration of the session. The opposition is also up in the arms against the government on its performance and delivery. Even though ahead of the assembly session, the ruling coalition partners, the Peoples Democratic Party and the Congress have put a united face but the opposition has gathered equal strength to corner the government. To devise a joint strategy for countering the opposition, the Chief Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad today had a meeting with the coalition legislators for chalking out a strategy. Addressing the meeting, the Chief Minister said that the coalition government had performed exceedingly well during the past five years and the development initiatives taken by it have benefited people in all regions and areas. He asked the legislators to speak about the achievements of the government with facts and figures. He said the legislators should be fully acquainted with the measures taken by the government from time to time to change the economic profile of the State and utilize the opportunity of the month-long session to highlight these. He underscored the need for the coalition legislators to work as a cohesive force and convince the people of the State about the good work done by the government to ameliorate the condition of the deprived sections of the society and the massive development offensive launched across the State The Chief Minister said that the legislature was a democratic forum for the people's representatives to talk about their problems and discuss solutions. He said the opposition had right to criticize the government where it felt the latter was faulting. However, this right had to be exercised in the best traditions of democracy and maintaining the decorum of the House. He said legislators on either side should use facts rather than lungpower while putting a point across. He asked the Chief Whips of the coalition parties to ensure attendance of the legislators in the respective Houses during the session. The Chief Minister hoped that the ensuing session would through up lively discussions and debates on issues of public importance and raise the standard of deliberations. The Deputy Chief Minister, Mr. Muzaffar Hussain Baig also addressed the meeting and spoke about the positive work done by the coalition government during the past five years. He had special word of praise for the Chief Minister who he said was not only the Leader of the House but symbolized the State. He said, he had been directed by his party Patron and former Chief Minister, Mufti Mohammad Sayeed to convey full support of the party to the Chief Minister. He said the coalition parties would work in close coordination. The Leader of the PDP Legislature Party, Abdul Aziz Zargar and Deputy Leader of the Congress legislature Party, Mangat Ram Sharma while speaking in the meeting, stressed on floor coordination and active participation of legislators in the proceedings of the two Houses. They asked the legislators to come fully prepared and take active part in the proceedings. |
