| 2007: Another glorious year for SKUAST-Jammu | | VC brings University to limelight | | Ajay Meenia Jammu | Jan 7 The Sher-e-Kashmir University of Agricultural Sciences & Technology, Jammu under the stewardship of Dr. Nagendra Sharma, Vice-Chancellor during the year 2007 brought this University into limelight not only at the national level but also at the international level in all the fronts. Sharma succeeded single handedly in getting around Rs.90 crores from different sources for the development of this University which can be clearly reflected by visualizing the development of huge infrastructure at the main campus Chatha and R.S. Pura. It may be recalled that Chief Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad after inaugurating the Central Library at Chatha on November 12, 2007 at a cost of around Rs. 10 crores has proudly announced that he has never come across such a library during his life time. For the infrastructural development the, Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) sanctioned twelve more projects under Horticultural Technology Mini-Mission pertaining to different crops during the year. Besides, ICAR also sanctioned one more Krishi Vigyan Kendras at Reasi raising the strength of KVK’s to six. Some projects were also sanctioned by Department of Science & Technology and Department of Bio-Technology, Govt. of India. Keeping in view the demand for vegetables, the University opened a farmers’ friendly participatory vegetable research activity at Karlah (Patnitop) for seed and off-season vegetable production. SKUAST-J introduced Post Graduate Programme in various disciplines of agriculture and veterinary sciences raising the strength of divisions to twenty six and sixteen for masters and doctorate programme respectively in both the faculties. Board of Management of this University recommended establishment of four new faculties. The students of this University actively participated in various co-curricular activities like debates, cultural programmes, sports and games etc and brought laurels to the University by winning several prizes. Several faculty improvement training programmes, workshops, symposiums and conferences at National and International level were organized by the University. Eminent Experts from Holland and Polland visited this University and had interaction with scientists in the fields of vegetables, floriculture and apiculture. The deputy director researcher, Deepak Khar said that the State Variety Committee released two varieties of crop for the farmers which include RSPT-2 (Toria) and RSPR-3 (Raya) and another variety on paddy RR-564 is also in the final stage of release. In the recently held Regional Agriculture meeting of Indian Council of Agricultural Research at Solan, for three States comprising Jammu & Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh and Uttaranchal, the said University received tremendous appreciation from all the corners apart from Dr. Mangla Rai, Director General, ICAR, and Abdul Aziz Zargar, Agriculture Minister for its significant contribution in the field of agriculture The University is becoming one of the model agricultural universities in the country. |
