| 2007 saw surge in criminal activities in valley | | | Early Times Reporter Srinagar | Jan 7 The year 2007, which is claimed by government as the "peaceful year" has no matter received decline in violence, but sources maintain the crime rate has gone up in the year. The data released by the State Home Department, reveals that 26 rape cases have been reported during 2007. Besides, 49 murder cases and 64 attempts to murder cases have been registered by the police. "Such activities depict a sharp rise in the crime related incidents. Youth now-a-days are fed up with the violence, but a certain count of ill-behaved youth resort to criminal activities," said a senior police official on conditions of anonymity. Experts believe that year 2007 saw a decline in political violence but "witnessed an upsurge in criminal activities". "The crimes committed were heinous and shocking. Most disturbing is the fact that some of them are organized," said middle aged Bashir Ahmad, who works in education department. He recalls that the most gruesome event that 2007 witnessed was the rape and murder of an 8th standard student from Handwara. This was followed by another heart rending event of the same nature in Srinagar's radio colony area, in which the victim was again a minor. Meanwhile, there was a murder of a business man by his son in Boulevard area. The fag end of the year saw some events of exploitation of local girls by some pimps. People allege that police has not done their due role in bringing culprits to book. "Though majority of the perpetrators of heinous crimes committed in 2007 have been identified and some arrested too but how they will actually be punished is yet to be seen," says Mushtaq Ahmad, a doctor from Baramulla. |
