| 220 men of security forces and police have been punished for human rights violations | | | Early Times Reporter Jammu | Jan 8 The state Assembly was today informed that action had been against as many as 50 police personnel,81 Army personnel and 81 officials of security forces on charge of having committed excesses of various nature.These officials were awarded different kinds of punishment. This information was given in reply to a question tabled by Panthers Party MLA,Harsh Dev Singh. He was informed that punishment was awarded to 81 officials of the security forces and 50 police personnel for violating human rights. The Government has assured the member that all cases pertaining to custodial killings,excesses and human rights violations were being examined and investigated into and wherever action was called the Government will not hesitate. The state Government also claimed that the state Human Rights Commission,established in 1998,had been performing its duties satisfactorily and the Government has taken action on the recommendations made by the commission from time to time.It has also been made mandatory for the Government for initiating action on the report of the commission within a period of four weeks and complete the proceedings by taking appropriate action within a period of four months. The Government also informed the House that a proposal has been sent to the Union Ministry of Home Affairs in which the centre has been asked to accord sanction for bringing widows and children of deceased militants under the purview of the Rehabilitation council with financial assistance from the Government of India. |
