It seems that the Peoples Democratic Party patron Mufti Mohammad Sayeed who remained at dagger drawn with the main ruling partner in the government has suddenly found a large lobby of sympathizers in the Congress party.
As the debate on the motion of thanks to the Governor's address began in the legislative assembly this morning, the Congress legislators blew their lungs out to sing in praise of Mufti. It may be recalled that the Governor's address too had laid huge emphasis on the remarkable works done during Mufti's tenure as Chief Minister.
Picking up from where the Governor had left yesterday, the Congress legislators while participating in the debate made mention of Mufti while speaking on the achievements of the government in different sectors. Talking about every department, the Congress legislators mentioned that each project had been initiated by Mufti and completed by Azad. Later the leader of Opposition Abdul Rahim Rather said, "I wonder why they are claiming this when the PDP has been on record having said that all projects initiated by Mufti were halted by Azad". He added sarcastically, "Mufti made Jammu and Kashmir number two in corruption and the Azad's regime has brought the state at number one in this sphere".
Earlier Prem Sagar Aziz of Congress moved the motion saying that an address be presented to the Governor "that the members of the Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly assembled in this session are deeply grateful to his excellency the Governor of Jammu and Kashmir for the address he has been pleased to deliver to both the Houses of legislature assembled together on January 7, 2008. The motion was seconded by Mr. Abdul Gaffar Sofi.
Prem Sagar Aziz opening the discussion said that historic measures during last five years have been taken to carry forward peace process and bring all areas under the ambit of all round development. He cited examples of founding of new districts, opening up off roads across LoC, establishing of scores of degree colleges, higher secondary school, ITIs, construction of roads, bridges, hospitals and power stations during that period.
He said that the report of the House Committee constituted to investigate backdoor appointments and Kundal Report be tabled in the House. He said that an expert committee be constituted for recommending new colleges in the state. He also suggested for a committee to monitor implementation of Roshni scheme and demanded that a comprehensive policy be formulated for return of migrants to valley. He also suggested for effective implementation of National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme.
Abdul Gaffar Sofi said that the coalition government has achieved a lot on all fronts and added that the restoration of peace to a greater extent was its biggest achievement. He said that the corruption, which had made inroads in the vitals of administration and social life has been arrested checked by making anti-corruption law more stringent. Making a mention of Mughal Road project, Mr. Sofi also enumerated some of the mega projects either completed or under execution in the state.
