| Medal winner fencers felicitated | | | Early Times Reporter Jammu | Jan 11 To encourage the medal winners at national and international level and also to boost the morale of budding talent, the Jammu and Kashmir Amateur Fencing Association organized a felicitation function here this afternoon. Elated over the splendid achievements of the fencers, honor whether it is participation at the world level or excelling at the national competitions, the management of the Fencing Association proudly announced that the game has set the State’s flag flying high during all these years of its existence. Giving detailed description of the event wise achievements, general secretary of the Association, Vijay Sharma said that in the recently held Senior National Fencing Championship at Tiruvanthanpuram in Kerela, J&K won five medals (two silvers and three bronze) as also overall third position. In individual saber event, Ujjwal Gupta and Rashid Ahmed won a silver and bronze medal respectively while the saber men team (Rashid Ahmed, Ujjwal Gupta, Maninder Pal and Ajit Singh) won silver medal. As also in men’s epee individual event, Sanjeev Suri, who is serving with Commercial Taxes Department, won a bronze medal. In women section, Shivani Hans bagged a bronze medal in saber individual event. Later, president of the Association, M J Sharma disclosed that during the sporting season 2006-2007, J&K fencers won as many as 23 medals including two gold, six silvers and 15 bronze in different age categories and groups. He had special mention about fencers, Rashid Ahmed, serving with J&K Police, and Ujjwal Gupta for representing the country in the Senior World Championship held at St. Petersburg in Russia in October last The Association president informed that four fencers from the state, Rashid Ahmed, Ujjwal Gupta, Sanjeev Suri and Shivani Hans have qualified for the Asian Fencing Championship to be held at Bangkok in Thialand in April thereby brining laurels to the state. In addition, Ujjawal Gupta, a top ranked fencer of the country, has been nominated for Junior World Championship to be held in Italy in May. Soon after finishing the list of achievements by the Association, Sharma came to the point of facilities being provided by the State Sports Council to the players. Highlighting the plight of the players, he reiterated the demand of an independent hall for routine practice of the fencers. The president had a special mention about encouraging response to the game in the districts of Samba and Kathua where events are organized time to time by the Association. Later, speaking to the fencers and office bearers of the Fencing Association, chief guest of the function, Secretary, J&K State Sports Council, Ravinder Gupta admitted that the fencers deserve a great deal considering their exceptional achievements but at the same time he advised the Association to spread their area of activities by activating their units at other districts. Prominent among others present were Joint Secretary of the J&K State Sports Council, Siddharth Sharma and vice-president of the J&K Amateur Fencing Association, A K Tikoo, who also presented vote of thanks. |
