The mystery surrounding assassination of PDP Minister Ghulam Nabi Lone once again rocked the State Assembly here today as his son and sitting MLA from Sangrama, Shoaib Lone demanded CBI Probe from the state government in order to expose the killers behind the gruesome killing.
Shoaib Lone raised the demand during the discussion on the Governor’s address in the State Assembly. National Conference, CPI (M) and Panthers party legislators also supported Lone’s demand while members sitting on the treasury benches remained mute spectators all along.
Participating in the discussion, Shoib tracked events preceding death of his father in a firing incident inside their house in Srinagar on October 18, 2005 and said at the time of his fathers’ death PDP was on verge of split.
Smelling political conspiracy behind the death of his father, who was considered a dissident leader by the PDP leadership, Shoaib also claimed that militants had not killed his father. "If you want to know the real truth why don’t you order a CBI probe’’, Lone who became emotional, thundered amid pin drop silence in the house.
He repeatedly urged senior members of the house to come to his rescue and put pressure on the government to order CBI probe so that he can punish killers of his father.
"People in my constituency ask me to unmask killers of Lone. When I come to Assembly each day my mother asks me son did you raise the issue of death of your father in the house and what are you doing to nab the killers". I feel helpless and now I am dejected as I am tired of running from pillar to post. Lone also offered to resign if state government failed to concede his demand.
Urging the state government not to shield the murderers of his father Shoaib said, if the state government will not order CBI probe he will conclude that government is shielding killers of his father.
In his address Shoaib Lone also raised the issue of rampant corruption and shared his first hand experience with the members of the house. He said recently when he visited office of one of the cabinet ministers in connection with some work of one his close relatives he was asked to bribe officials. He claimed he paid the amount from his salary for the work done. Members of the house took it seriously and cornered the state government.
Leader of the Opposition AR Rather came out in the open defence of Shoiab Lone and blasted government’s silence over the issue of ordering CBI probe. He said the state government after conducting the departmental inquiry slept over the issue and till date has not cleared the air over the mystery of Lone’s death.
Ghulam Hassan Mir, the lone PDP MLA, who stood in support of Shoiab Lone said after the death of Ghulam Nabi Lone the state government conducted an inquiry and admitted security lapse. I want to ask the state what it did after that. How can we defend the people of the state when we are not safe our- selves. Harsh Dev Singh, MY Tarigami, Mir Saifullah, Sharief- ud- Din Shariq, Ali Mohd Sagar and several other legislators belonging to opposition stood in support of Shoiab Lone and supported his demand for CBI probe.
When Mangat Ram Sharma from the government side made an attempt to assure the house that he will apprise Chief Minister about the demand and only he will take the final decision the house erupted again. NC legislators alleged that in the absence of CM the entire government seems to have collapsed. They waited for Speaker’s direction to defuse the lock- jam but in vain as Speaker Tara Chand made failed attempts to pacify opposition members. In the end he adjourned the house till 3.00 p.m.
