| An embarrassment at fountainhead of politics | | | Early Times Reporter Jammu | Jan 11 Once a nerve center of the political elite of entire state, the legislator's hostel in the winter capital city today stands an apostle of embarrassment for its inmates. There were times when one would find half a kilometer queue of the visitors coming to meet their legislators. Today, the hapless visitors coming from several parts of the state would prefer to meet their representatives anywhere on earth but not in the legislators' hostel. The tall and majestic building of the MLAs' hostel situated in the heart of the city and just behind the civil secretariat have some angles of utter ignorance. Mufti Mohammad Sayeed and his entire Peoples Democratic Party pitched high for demilitarization in the state but it seems that they overlooked this building which should have been a testimony to the much claimed "normalcy". The MLAs' Hostel is arguably one of the most heavily militarized and fortified building in the winter capital city which just scares away any one who wants to visit there. Civic amenities and cleanliness also got increased attention of the present government. The heaps of garbage dump inside the legislators' hostel reveals that fountain head of the political power have got no such attention. While most of the visitors coming from far and off places of the state prefer not to go inside, those who have no other option have to pass through worst humiliation. First, that one does not have a choice to park a vehicle outside the building. The nearest parking place is either Jewel Chowk or the Doctors' Lane at the Shalamar Chowk. Once the vehicle is parked at a distance of two to three kilometers, the visitor –may be elders and women –have to walk all this distance. On reaching the main gate there is huge humiliation in waiting. There is small –rather very small –security check area through which one has to pass. There are four to five cops puffing cigarettes and sitting there comfortable. Keep reading to learn what happens if the visitor is a women:- there is a table on which the register for the entry is kept. The table is a little over a feet in height. The woman visitor is asked all the questions –name, husband's / father's name, address etc. Then she is asked to put signatures on the register for which she has to bow down to touch the one feet high register. When she feels while bowing down in front of five men does not need to written here. A sensible reader can well understand. And if you are planning to visit there in the evening, just drop your plan. The staff from main gate to the main entrance –mostly cops drawn from the CRPF –is invariable and highly drunk. Visiting there in the evening is at your own risk. This is the reason that none of the resourceful legislator is now putting up inside the MLAs' hostel. They have either hired accommodation outside or made some other arrangements. EARLY TIMES spoke to a number of inmates. Legislators said that when they visit their constituencies people place them literally on their eyes but when their electorate visit them they have to go through worst humiliation. |
