Main accused in Sikh boy case arrested from Delhi
8/24/2006 10:23:48 PM

Jaipur, Aug 24 : The main accused in the hair chopping incident
of a Sikh boy here was arrested at a Delhi Airport today.
According to police sources, Arjun Meena, the main culprit was
identified in Mumbai last night at about 7:30 pm. Meena,
managed to fly to Delhi.
Rajasthan police intercepted and arrested him at Delhi airport
this morning. He has been brought to the city and is currently
being interrogated, informed home minister Gulab Chand Kataria.
Inderprit Singh,17, a class XII student, while on his way back
from school on a motorbike on Monday, was stopped by a group of
youths, who forced him into a car, assaulted and forcibly chopped
off his hair. They later dropped a dazed Inderprit near the school.
Inderprit says Arjun Meena, whom he could identify, along with
other friends used to stand outside their school and tease girls,
against which he protested. Arjun suspected that Inderprit was
instigating his girlfriend, a student of the same school, against
him.
The arrest has relatively brought down tempers and pacified
the Sikh community here, which was agitated as hair chopping is
considered to be the highest insult to their religion.
Gurmeet Singh, secretary, Sikh Samaj said: ''We are satisfied that
the government has listened to our pleas and has taken prompt
action. We also thank all the other communities Brahman samaj, Jains
and others who stood by us in this crisis.
''The episode was not just against one community but totally
against Indian culture and traditions, which should be condemned at
all levels.''
The turban tying ceremony (dastarbandi) of Inderprit was performed
last evening by SGPC chief Avtar Singh Makkar.
