| Good Idea: Idea in J&K | | | Early Times Reporter Jammu | Jan 11 Setting in a fast pace of competition among the cell-phone operators in this state of "telephone revolution" the Aditya Birla-promoted Idea Cellular Ltd today bagged Letters of Intent (LoIs) from the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) for providing Unified Access Services in Jammu and Kashmir. A company official said that it will be rolling out services in Jammu and Kashmir as soon as spectrum is made available. Idea Cellular is a wireless telephony company operating in various states in India. It initially started in 1995 as a join venture between the Tatas, Aditya Birla Group and AT&T by merging Tata Cellular and Birla AT&T Communications. Initially having a very limited footprint in the GSM arena, the acquisition of Escotel in 2004 gave Idea a truly pan-India presence covering Maharashtra (excluding Mumbai), Goa, Gujarat, Andhra Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Chattisgarh, Uttar Pradesh (East and West), Haryana, Kerala, Rajasthan and Delhi (inclusive of NCR). Now the company has got Letters of Intent for Jammu and Kashmir and eight other states in the country, it is learnt. The company has its retail outlets under the "Idea n' U" banner. The company has also been the first to offer flexible tarrif plans for prepaid customers. It also offers GPRS services in urban areas. It may be mentioned here that Jammu and Kashmir made its foray into the cell phone service ten years latter then rest of the country with the coming in of BSNL mobile service in August 2003. In short span of four and half years, the teledensity in Jammu and Kashmir has already crossed the national average and in terms of fast growth Jammu and Kashmir stands next only to Punjab. The much-awaited mobile telephony was launched in Jammu and Kashmir on August 2003 with the thenChief Minister, Mufti Mohammad Sayeed, making the historic call to the then Prime Minister, Atal Behari Vajpayee, from his official chamber. One can recall that Mufti sitting along with his Cabinet colleagues called up Mr. Vajpayee and thanked him for keeping his promise to start mobile services in the State. The BSNL was followed by Airtel as first private player and then came in the Aircel. With Idea getting the Letter of Intent for operations in Jammu and Kashmir the competition is likely to stiffer but the consumer will have wide options. |
