| J&K lifts Jr National Korfball Championship | | | Early Times Reporter Jammu | Jan 12 Jammu and Kashmir today clinched the Junior National Korfball Championship outplaying Uttar Pradesh 10-8 in the title clash that took place at Pondicherry this evening. “Last year J&K lost in the final to Haryana to contain with a silver, but this time the team was mentally well prepared to make it to the title,” general secretary of the J&K Korfball Association told Sports & Allied News. Sharing details of the event, Manjit Singh said that it was due to the team effort that J&K emerged winner in the close contest. Leading by three goals (6-3) at the end of first half, girls played a key role in J&K victory. “This time girls played equally good game, especially in the second half, helping the team maintain the lead. Kawaldeep Singh and Jatinder Singh were leading scorers with three baskets each while Riya Salathia contributed two. Meenakshi and Ranvijay added one basket each,” said Manjit. Jubiliant over the team’s performance, Manjit Singh said, “we were striving hard for the title for the last couple of years but always lost by a narrow margin reaching close to the goal.” In all, J&K got three penalties but only two could be converted into goals while UP successfully convered two chances came their way. Meanwhile, the last year’s champion Haryana finished fourth losing to Andhra Pradesh in the hardliner 10-11. |
