Taking the government heads on over its most ambitious campaign, the Opposition National Conference has decided to move an adjournment motion in the legislative assembly against the alleged rampant corruption at all levels of administration.
Reacting to allegations made by a legislator against a Minister, the leader of the Opposition Abdul Rahim Rather said that his party will stall proceedings of the assembly until the corrupt minister resigns. Rather did not mention the name of the Minister who was accused by the MLA of demanding bribe from him.
On the issue of the charges levelled by an independent legislator, Shoaib Lone, in the assembly Friday that a minister had taken a bribe of Rs.40,000 from him, the National Conference convened a meeting of its legislature party here Saturday evening and decided to raise the issue in the 'most forceful fashion' by moving an adjournment motion.
'Never before any MLA (Member of Legislative Assembly) has levelled such charges against a minister,' said leader of the opposition and National Conference leader Abdul Rahim Rather. 'First, we would like to know who the minister is, and secondly, whether he resigns, and thirdly whether Chief Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad sacks him,' he said.
Shoaib Lone, legislator from Sangrama in north Kashmir, had alleged he had paid a bribe of Rs.40,000 to get a job done. He did not name the minister, but he promised that he would confide in the chief minister.
"National Conference has been demanding a check on the political corruption, which is rampant in the state from the day, coalition government took over the reign of power", Rather said. He added, the allegations leveled by MLA Sangrama Shoaib Ahmed Lone are serious in nature and government can not sleep over the matter only because fingers have been raised against one of its own ministers. "An elected representative of the people himself claimed to be one of the victim of corruption in the power corridors", he said adding, "The shocking revelation made on the floor of the House have to be taken seriously and chief minister should come out with an explanation over the matter, if he was really serious about his so called war on corruption".
NC, he said, has highlighted the issue of corruption on several occasions on public platform and through media but unfortunately the government `is only feeding people with its hollow slogans' instead of doing anything on the ground.
"Slogans like `Curbing Corruption is Top priority' and `Sword against Corruption' is not in any way going to help the people", he said. Rather was of the opinion that chief minister should demonstrate his sincerity by assuring an action against the guilty. "The MLA is ready to reveal the name of the minister if government assures action against the guilty", he said.
