| Natrang stages ‘Damad’ | | | Early Times Reporter Jammu | Jan 13 ‘Damad’ a play in Hindi written by Balwant Gargi and Directed by Anil Tickoo was featured in Natrang’s weekly Sundays theatre programme. Its director Balwant Thakur while introducing the play to the audience informed that Natrang actors have sacrificed many festivals like Lohri and Diwali to maintain the continuity of its weekly theatre series and Damad has added yet another dimension to the celebration of Lohri in the town. The play ‘Damad’ revolves around a ‘Baagi’ – freedom fighter, Himmat Singh who knocks at the door of a family, who are waiting the arrival of their son-in-law on Lohri eve. The pleas of the old woman not to give shelter are hypnotically transformed by the ‘freedom fighter’, who pleads that to keep the flame of freedom burning; she has to give refuge to him. He even reminds her that her husband had sacrificed his life for the sake of freedom. The lady is moved that she not only give shelter to the ‘Baagi’ but make him sit near her daughter to pose as her husband only to avoid the police from arresting him. The police came and thought the ‘Baagi’ to be the real son-in-law; the police went away but kept a watch on the house. However, the ‘Baagi’ escapes after the police have left. Meanwhile, the original son-in-law also happens to come there and the story takes a new turn on the second entry of police as they thought him to be the ‘Baagi’, when he was sitting beside his wife. The pleadings of the old lady that the second one is her original “Damad” fall on the deaf ears. The pathetic feelings of a lady, who has not lost her husband but also sacrificed her “Damad” for the cause of freedom, are aesthetically portrayed in the play. The most noteworthy feature of play was the combination of excellent design, lighting and sound which was the result of creditable and imaginative direction of Anil Tickoo who also enacted the lead role of Baagi. Pankaj Sharma in his role of a Police Officer demonstrated his command and maturity in handling the character with full professional ease. The role of Nihar was enacted confidently by Kamaljeet Kaur, Dulari Parihar as Bachno made her debut with a promising note. Mohit Sharma played the role of Damad with creditable acting strength. Ankush Lakhnotra supported the cast of a Sipahi. The lights of the play was designed and executed by Sanjeev Gupta. The backstage work was looked after by Mayank Bakshi, Pankush Verma, Rohti Verma and Mohd. Yasin. |
