Lohri a historic festival since Indus civilization: Governor
Mangat describes Lohri occasion to burn evils in bonfires

Secular Citizens Forum Jammu in association with Shaheed-e-Azam Bhagat Singh Foundation today organized Lohri Milan here.
Among others, Governor Lt. Gen (Retd) S. K. Sinha, Minister for Health and Medical Education Pt. Mangat Ram Sharma who is also Chief Patron of the Secular Forum, Minister for Agriculture Mr. Abdul Aziz Zargar, Minister for School Education Peerzada Mohammad Sayeed, Minister for Higher Education Mr. Gulchain Singh Charak, Minister for Rural Development Mr. Mula Ram, Minister of State for Health and Medical Education Peer Mohammad Hussain, Minister of State for Social Welfare Mr. G. M. Saroori, Chairman Handicrafts Development Corporation Haji Abdul Rashid, Legislators, Mrs. Kanta Andotra, Mr. Arvinder Singh Micky, Mr. Abdul Majid Wani, Mr. Lal Mohammad Sabir, Mr. Prem Sagar Aziz, Executive Members of Secular Citizens Forum Jammu, political leaders, civil and police officers, social activities and prominent citizens were present.
Governor while greeting the people on the occasion said “Lohri is a historical festival celebrated since Indus Valley civilization”. He said such festivals strengthen the bonds of brother hood, communal harmony and amity among the people belonging to different communities and religions. He said the festival symbolizes onset of spring after a spell of chilly winter. He hoped that this auspicious occasion be celebrated with fervour and gaiety in true spirit of composite culture adding the best way of celebrating the festival is to share each others joy and bring cheer to all.
Pt. Mangat Ram in his address greeted the people and said “the people of state have always strengthened the bonds of brotherhood, communal harmony and amity adding that they celebrated all the festival together to make these colourful and lovely”.
He said Lohri symbolizes victory over the evil and “This day is the occasion to burn evil in the bonfires and vow to uphold righteousness and brotherhood”. He referred the traditional amity of the state giving particular reference to the high values of love and brotherhood shown by people of Jammu whenever the situation demanded.
He said the formation of Secular Forum was to further cement the ties between people of various religions and regions.
On the occasion Governor and Health Minister lighted the bonfire followed by prayer to Fire God. Traditional Lohri sweets were also distributed and a cultural programme organized where in skits, folk songs and dances were presented to grace the occasion.
