State Heros Cup: Khalsa beaten by Akali Kour Singh Club in final

The all important goal by Manjit Singh in the last minutes today guided Akali Kour Singh Club to a 2-1 victory over Khalsa Club in the final of State Heros Cup hockey tournament played at K K Hakhu Stadium, here.
Akali Kour Singh Club lifted the Cup for the second consecutive time.
Remained equal 1-1 for most of the match time, the score suddenly tilted towards Akali Kour Singh Club when Manjeet Singh made a dramatic turn around sounding the board in the last minutes leaving the entire defence line of Khalsa stunned.
The star studded side of Khalsa Club had left with no other option but to pat the opponent because there was no time remaining to fight back. Star performer from Khalsa side, international Mandeep Singh could not do much for his team in the title clash because he was completely marked by the opponents in a strategic move.
However, those witnessed the final enjoyed the game a lot, the reason being both sides played nice hockey making attacks and counter attacks. The fight was so tough that it can be gauged from the penalty corners awarded to both sides. Khalsa Club got five penalty corners while Akali Kour Singh got four and both the sides managed to convert one each into the goal.
Earlier, D (Dalwinder) Singh opened the account for the winner side through a penalty corner in the 35th minute. The lead was soon equalized by Khalsa Club in the 38th minute on a penalty corner converted into goal by Rajinder Singh.
The match also witnessed a yellow card warning from the centre umpire to Takdir Singh of Khasla Club in the 44th minute.
Today’s match was officiated by Dalbir Mehta, Vijay Vaid, Motinder Pal Singh and Mukesh Kumar.
Meanwhile, the resident secretary of the Jammu and Kashmir Hockey Association told SAN that another state level open tournament, Ashwani Memorial hockey championship shall take place from January 21 at the same venue.
