| Restructuring C&R in pipeline | | | Early Times Reporter Jammu | Jan 13 With the rail networks getting increased attention in Jammu and Kashmir, the Government is considering setting up of an independent wing for Railways after its separation from the Crime Branch. Jammu and Kashmir has a joint wing of Police looking after the Crime and Railways. In order to further strengthen the railway security grid in Jammu and Kashmir the state government is contemplating bifurcation of Department of Railways and crimes. According to official sources, after the launch of the railway services to Udhampur the need was felt to bifurcate the crime and railways in order to address the security related issues. "We were waiting for the green signal from the state government and also raised the issue on number of occasions to stream line the functioning of the department. Sources said the state government has now appointed a separate DIG for railway wing indicating that a preliminary exercise in presently underway to completely bifurcate the crime and railways department in the coming months. We have already started a preliminary exercise to bifurcate the two wings without creating much chaos and confusion, a senior official in the crime and railways revealed. Hectic traffic on the Jammu-Udhampur route and doubling of the railway track has also necessitated creation of separate security wing to deal with security related issues. A senior official while commenting on the need to adopt such a measure said, If senior officials will continue to devote their time and energy simultaneously for two different wings they won't be able to devote quality time to each one of them. Hitherto, the crime and Railways has been headed by one IG and one DIG.If the experiment succeeded the Government may appoint one IG to head the Railways and the other Department of crimes. Official sources said that this step was being taken also with the possibility of linking Kashmir with Udhampur by train within one year. |
