Meeting their separated siblings and touching the soil of their birth after several decades, every visitor coming from the other side of fence have always expressed the only wish –a chance to die and get buried at the birthplace.
Some people like 107 years old Nawab Din even petitioned before the state High Court seeking the judicial intervention to get a chance of living at the birth place till death. One Ghulam Mohammad traveling through Poonch Rawalakote bus service though passed away during his stay in Poonch. He might have longed for years to get back to the soil of his birth but his wish has come true upon his death.
Ghulam Mohmmad, 82, who had availed the Poonch-Rawalkote bus service for a visit to his native village of Loran in July last year, died on Saturday morning. Thd man from Pakistan-occupied Kashmir, who had come to Poonch some six months ago, had his last wish fulfilled when he was buried at his ancestral village beside the graves of his parents.
After a lot of debate over whether his body should be sent back to PoK, the authorities with the help of the local residents finally fulfilled his last wish by giving him a burial at Loran.
As a young man of 21, Mohmmad had left his family behind to cross the LoC during the 1947 Indo-Pak conflict and settled in Muhajir colony in Palandhari belt of PoK.
"It was his last wish to die in his ancestral village in Loran and to be buried there. Administration, people and the court helped us in fulfilling his wish," his nephew Shah Mohmmad said.
Mohmmad had crossed the LoC on July 16 on a 15-day permit but was granted an additional 10-day period when his health condition deteriorated and he was hospitalised.
As the period expired and his condition improved, the authorities tried to deport him to PoK, but Mohmmad moved the Jammu and Kashmir High Court, pleading that he be allowed to stay till his death as nobody was there in PoK to look after him and his entire family is in Loran.
