| …and the Minister reacted, but late | | Peerzada to submit resignation to chief minister today | | Early Times Reporter Jammu | Jan 14
He was there in the middle of the House and in the middle of the controversy when all the heated discussions revolved around him. The Chief Minister was left by quite few words in defence and the Deputy Chief Minister said he often felt like resigning. The entire opposition fired salvos against the government and the treasury benches nodded in conformity as what they were saying was correct. Despite all this, stalling the routine business of assembly, the "Corrupt Minister did not resign". He did not even offer to resign on the moral grounds. This is how the story went for the day. However, late evening developments hinted at the minister, being talked about - the name by now having become an open secret - education minister Peerzada Mohammad Hussain, having planned to offer his resignation from to the chief minister tomorrow. When the legislative assembly met this morning for the Question Hour, the entire Opposition, as already anticipated, was on the feet demanding a discussion on charges of corruption levelled by a legislator against a Minister. The MLA Sangrama Shoaib Lone had levelled charges of corruption against a Minister on Friday. Ever since, almost every one within and outside the House knows well who the Minister is and what job the MLA wanted to get done. The House is at fire with anger, the opposition is soothing, the ruling coalition members are keenly watching the next action. Interestingly, so is the Minister in question who has been accused of accepting money from the legislator through his conduit. As rightly put by the Chief Minister that action should not be directly taken against the Minister "till the wires were completely connected", it is not wise to suggest that the Minister should have been sacked without a trial. But since it is known all over that who the MLA is talking about, the Minister should have at his own offered an explanation if not the resignation. One should commend the Habba Kadal MLA and former Minister Raman Mattoo on this account. Few days back, the sex scandal issue was raised in the House by some opposition legislator. Mattoo was prompt to get up and say that "I am an accused, and the issue is subjudiced, therefore this should not be discussed here". This needs courage to face a reality. The Minister who has been accused by the MLA of corruption, is now being talked about by every one. If one reads between the words, almost every one participating in the debate in the legislative assembly today, including the Chief Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad, just stepped short of naming the Minister. Still the Minister does not find any reason to react, till late in the evening, when ultimately signals started spreading in political circles that he has planned to offer resignation on Tuesday. |
