| Govt. to fund scheme for promoting saffron cultivation and export | | | Early Times Reporter Jammu | Jan 15 In a bid to check the setback the saffron cultivation in Kashmir witnessed during the last several years the Government has launched,from the current year, a project for funding saffron expansion under the Technology Mission.The project seeks to cover area expansion,transfer of technology,provision for machinery equipment,including irrigation facilities. This information was given in the Legislative council today.The project is to continue for five years.In addition to this the Department of Agriculture has launched a massive campaign for determining soil fertility status of saffron soils.As many as 281 samples were analysed and the report on the recommendations and fertilizer application has been given to the farmers. In order to check any encroachment on saffron fields the Government has enacted a law in 2006 under which persons violating the Act by using saffrom fields for other commercial activities for building residential colonies were punishable with imprisonment for a period of one year and fine upto Rs.10,000.The Act also has made it mandatory for the daffron growers to register as a trader of saffron.The Government shall regulate stocking and export of saffron of standard quality and for this purpose it has developed links with established marketing agencies in the country. |
