The Legislative Assembly is once again up for a storm on Wednesday as following a stiff pressure from the Opposition, the government has agreed to table the Kundal Committee report on forest scams.
Interestingly, as promised by the Chief Minister, the report is being presented on day when Finance Minister present budget in the assembly. It has to be keenly seen as whether Opposition allows normal business in the House or the recommendations in the Forest scam kick off yet another row.
As soon as the Chief Minister finished his reply to the motion of thanks on Governor's address, a senior leader of the Opposition National Conference, Ali Mohammad Sagar made a point that why the government was dragging feet on taking the House into confidence on Kundal Committee report. The Kundal Committee had investigated the alleged scandals in the Forest department which also involved controversies against the Forest Minister Qazi Mohammad Afzal.
The Chief Minister made all efforts to convince the Opposition that there was no need to present the Kunal Committee report in the House at this stage but the National Conference did not agree. The Chief Minister said, "I would like to assure you all that there is no reference to the Minister. The Committee had made identified some officers who had committed irregularities and action is being taken against them". He added, once the final investigations by Vigilance Organisation and Crime Branch were complete then the report will be presented in the House.
However, without listening to any of the Chief Minister, the Opposition persisted with its arguments. Ali Mohammad Sagar made it difficult for the Chief Minister when he repeatedly said, "are you sure there is nothing against the Minister". The Chief Minister parried a direct affirmation to this question.
To this the leader of the opposition Abdul Rahim Rather said, "if you are sure that there is nothing against the Minister, and excerpts from the report have already appeared in the media, then what is the hesitation in presenting report in the assembly". As soon the Chief Minister agreed that the report will be tabled in the assembly, Rather said, "we will tell what is there against the Minister which you might have overlooked".
