Hold your breath: 65558 bottles every day

Did you ever know how much liquor is consumed in Jammu and Kashmir. And also did you much liquor and beer is gulped down in the Valley .
Here is the detail: The total consumption of various kinds of liquors during last two years in the state are; Indian Made Foreign Liquor 191.51 lakh bottles and beer 53.81 lakh bottles in Jammu division consumed during the year 2006-07 while as in Kashmir division IMFL 3.85 lakh bottles and beer 1.65 lakh bottles were consumed during the same year. In the year 2007-08 upto ending November 133.37 lakh bottles IMFL and 63.21 lakh bottles of beer were consumed in Jammu division while as 4.14 lakh bottles of IMFL and 4.09 lakh bottles of beer were consumed in Kashmir Valley during the same period.
Minister of State for Revenue and Finance Aijaz Ahmad Khan today informed the Legislative Assembly that licenses for establishment of liquor shops in form JKEL-2 are issued strictly as per requirements envisaged in J&K Excise Act Smvt, 1958 and rules framed there under. No sex-based discrimination is made while selecting applicants for issuance of such licenses. Licenses in the names of females who had applied for the same have been issued in the past.
Replying to a question by Mr. Jugal Kishore (BJP), the Minister said that 65 vends were selected through draw of lots in the year 2005 and the whole issue became sub judice in the High Court in the matter of Sandiya Devi V/S State. Therefore, no shop and vend licenses were issued during the last two years.
