| It is tricky: Rather | | | Early Times Reporter Jammu | Jan 16 Though the statistical jugulary unfolded by the Finance Minister Tariq Hameed Karra is yet be decoded by the critics and the Opposition but the initial reactions summed up the budget as “tricky”. While the National Conference has once again described the budget as an exercise of fudging the figures, the CPI(M) said that the budget did not have anything for the workers, employees and the poor populace of the state. The first reaction of the opposition National Conference was that the budget is 'cheating and playing tricks' on the people. The leader of Opposition Abdul Rahim Rather, however, said that he will be making a detailed ‘autopsy’ in his speech during debate on the budget. In his immediate reaction, Rather said: 'Presenting zero deficit budget is cheating and playing tricks with people'. He wondered how the state could have a zero-deficit budget when bills worth over Rs.500 crore (five billion) were pending in the government treasuries. 'Government cannot explain many things like why it cannot pay salaries on time, why no GP (General Provident) fund and other payments, if it's a zero deficit budget,' said Rather, a former finance minister himself. The opposition leader also pointed out that the budget speech didn't say anything about 'unemployment - one of major problems faced by the state - and agriculture that sustains 75 percent of the state's population'. He charged that the state may spend Rs.87,000 crore by next year end, 'but we do not know where this money is being spent and what physical targets have been achieved'. |
