| Hunt on for Peerzada’s PCC successor | | Taj, Aslam, Gani Vakil among frontrunners | | Nirbhay Jammual Jammu | Jan 18 Lost in the allegations and counter-allegations, Peerzada Mohammad Sayeed is gone; now in the Congress circles discussions are on for new president of the Pradesh Congress Committee. The ‘vacuum’ created in the cabinet by Peerzada’s exit may be filled up by his other colleagues and somebody might get the charge of School education department in next couple of days. However, the Congress party which is preparing for assembly elections likely to be announced anytime later this year can not afford to go ahead without an organization president. Interestingly, the role of the PCC President in Jammu and Kashmir has been quite that of dummy ever since Ghulam Nabi Azad took over as Chief Minister but in an elections but in the election year organizational head important for looking after affairs of party and becoming an interface between the cadres and the high command. Though Peerzada’s exit from both posts was unceremonious and disgraceful but his recall from either of the posts was nevertheless imminent. It was already being considered to have a full time organization president in the election year. In that case, Peerzada had the option of retaining only one office –either PCC president or Minister. Sources said that such a move was afoot but Peerzada was reluctant to spare any of the offices. Now since Peerzada is back to pavilion, options are being actively discussed in the party circles for the new PCC chief. Sources said that names of CAPD Minister Taj Mohiuddin and Member Parliament Chowdhary Mohammad Aslam are among the frontrunners for the post. Again, Taj, on one hand is reluctant to leave is ministerial position for the organizational position and on the other hand does not enjoy the required clout and rapport with the cadres in the Valley. Chowdhary Mohammad Aslam, another potential option for the post of PCC president had given a dull performance at an earlier chance in the mid 1990s. “Given a chance Chief Minister would like to have his Man Friday Abdul Gani Vakil as the next president of the state unit of Congress”, quipped a Congress leader. |
