When a river flows every one feels liking taking a dip. This is what hundreds did hundreds of well meaning people did and fell in the deep muck of Srinagar sex scandal. However, is somebody deserves an accolade and even a prize for blowing the whistle for social cleansing; it is of course the Mohalla Sudhaar Committee of Purshiyar, Habbakadal.
In February 2006, when a young body named Ansari saw half nude clipping of a girl of his locality, he informed Firdous Ahmed, a shopkeeper and member of the Mohalla Sudhaar Committee. Firdous rushed to other members of the committee and it was decided that the matter should be brought to the notice of Police.
Many politicians, bureaucrats, police officers, lawyers and other well meaning people when heard the possibility and availability of a commodity of immoral trade, they happily accepted to have their share of the cake. The members of the Mohalla Sudhaar Committee too could have fallen into the same net but they decided to listen to their conscious which indeed suggested them to play the role of cleansing. Perhaps it was beyond their imagination as where this scandal will ultimately reach.
After learning that a girl of their locality whom they identified as Sabeena was the one appearing in obscene scenes in the MMS clipping, they immediately called a meeting of the members to discuss the matter. The meeting was attended by all members including –Mohammad Iqbal Gujri, Mohammad Sultan, Jan Mohammad Shalla, Ghulam Nabi Meer, Abdul Rashid Gujri, Habeebullah Shalla and Bilal Ahmed Watnu. It was decided that the matter should be brought to the notice of Police along with proof.
The members of the Mohalla Committee made well though out efforts to take the issue to a logical conclusion. They took care of two things. One that the matter is not revealed to anyone before the Police initiates investigation and second that a copy of the proof is kept intact so that if the concerned Police station fails to take cognizance of the matter the same can pursued with higher authorities.
Accordingly, the members of the Mohalla Committee, engaged services of one Mudasar Nazir, resident of the same locality and student of BCA. The clippings were shown to Mudasar to obtain his opinion as whether a print out can be taken and if the proof could be stored in some manner. Mudasar downloaded the clippings and wrote a CD for them which was later handed over to the Police Station Shaheed Ganj.
