| Avalanche warning issued | | | Early Times Reporter Jammu | Jan 19 Snow and Avalanche Study Establishment (SASE) today issued avalanche warning for the residents of various places in Jammu and Kashmir during coming 24 hours following moderate snowfall in the state. "Moderate to high danger exists in Manali-Leh axis and Drass-Kargil sector of J&K due to the current weather conditions, which are expected to yield moderate snowfall in higher reaches of J&K and Himachal Pradesh during the coming 24 hours," the SASE said at Chandigarh. The warning said that people staying above 2,500 meters in avalanche prone areas of Tangdar, Kupwara, Baramula, Sopore, Anantnag, Kargil, Doda, Gurez, Naugam, Banihal, Uri sector and Rajouri district of J&K are advised not to venture out in avalanche prone areas during the next 24 hours. SASE bulletin said that following fresh snowfall of 61 cm there was 186 cm of standing snow in Gulmarg. The amount of fresh/ total standing snowfall in other areas in J&K is Banihal (42cm/185 cm), Sonamarg (11cm/217 cm), Kanzalwan (45 cm/190 cm) and Drass (20 cm/75 cm). The fresh/ total standing at various places in HP is Manali (31 cm/ 50 cm), Dhundi (148 cm/ 275 cm), Solang Nalla (86 cm/ 175 cm) and Patsio (33 cm/ 140 cm), the SASE said. |
