| BGSBU launches biodiversity conservation movement | | | Early Times Reporter Jammu | Jan 20 Fulfilling its obligation towards biodiversity conservation as enshrined in the National Biodiversity Strategy and Action Plan, Baba Ghulam Shah Badshah University, today launched a conservation education movement targeting school children of the entire state of J&K through its Centre for Biodiversity Studies ‘CBS’. The programme was formally launched by G.M. Saroori Minister of State for Forests, while Vice Chancellor BGSBU Masud A. Choudhary presided over the function that was attended by various dignitaries, eminent scientists and academicians. The programme aims to promote interest and knowledge about the natural resources and biodiversity and foster concern for their conservation among the emerging generation. It also intends to create awareness of the economic, cultural, scientific and aesthetic values of fauna and flora and provide opportunities to school children (6th to 12th standard) to acquire attitudes, values and skills required to protect and improve the environment. The four weeks Vacation Training Programme (VTP) launched on the occasion is one of the various activities launched under the programme and would target students representing nodal schools from Kargil, Leh, Srinagar, Pulwama and Poonch. Districts. Under this programme, the BGSBU would cover school children of various socio-economic backgrounds through ten nodal schools called DNA Clubs “Department of Biotechnology’s Natural Resource Awareness Clubs” identified in all three regions i.e., Ladakh, Kashmir and Jammu. Speaking on the occasion, Saroori applauded the concern and the role of the BGSBU for promoting biodiversity conservation and research in the hinterlands of J&K. He congratulated the BGSBU for getting recognized as one of the eight institutions in India for implementation of this prestigious national project. Masud A. Choudhary in his presidential address shared his concern for the emerging conservation problems and stressed the need for all institutions to come forward and help mitigate the eminent catastrophe to which we all are heading. Prof. A. K. Koul briefed about the RRA and the emerging need to take science as a Career in the present time. Saroori and Choudhary also released computers, LCD projectors and various other equipment and publications to representatives of the nodal schools. Eminent Scientist and Director of Bombay Natural History Society (BNHS), Dr. Asad R. Rahmani also attended the function and described the BGSBU’s initiative as very timely and foresighted. The function was attended among others by Prof. N. Gohil of the University of Jammu, Dr. V. Verma Dean School of Biotechnology of the SMVDU, N. Kitchloo Regional Wildlife Warden. Prof. A.K. Koul Dean School of Biosciences and Biotechnology presented welcome address. |
