When you are talking over telephone you are always talking in the air, there may be many number of persons hearing you –says a statement of wisdom. But in Jammu and Kashmir using an Airtel connection, one needs to be little extra-cautious.
Therefore, next time you make a phone call from an Airtel connection be doubly sure about the unauthorized intermediate listener of your conversation.
Following allegations and written complaints from some army officers working in Jammu and Kashmir that their conversations were being put to tapping, the department of Telecommunication has asked its Vigilance wing to check the encrypting technology being used by Airtel in Jammu and Kashmir.
There were some allegations from army authorities to the Ministry of Defence regarding unauthorized tapping and leaking of information conversed on mobile telephones by its officials posted in Jammu and Kashmir state. Taking these complaints seriously, the government has asked its telecom vigilance wing to carry out a thorough check of encrypting technology deployed by private cellular operator Bharti Airtel in Jammu and Kashmir.
The Department of Telecom (DoT) has asked its Vigilance Telecom Monitoring (VTM) cell to physically check and ascertain the information regarding specific technology deployed by the mobile firm in the state, sources said.
The action comes in the wake of a report sought by Ministry of Defence asking details of the encrypting machines, used for coding of all mobile services, in the state because of its border with neighbouring Pakistan.
It is mandatory for telecom operators in the state to install encrypting machines for ensuring that all data and voice transferred from mobile handsets is properly encrypted with additional electronic signatures so that it could not be deciphered or decoded by any unauthorized person.
There were some allegations from army authorities to the Ministry of Defence regarding unauthorized tapping and leaking of information conversed on mobile telephones by its officials posted in the trouble-torn state.
As per license conditions, any encryption equipment connected to the operator's network for specific requirements need to have prior evaluation and approval of the government, sources said.
Operators cannot employ bulk encryption in its network, according to the license agreement and the service provider is responsible for ensuring privacy of its communication on its network and also to ensure that unauthorised interception of message did not take place.
