| 36 hour long encounter leaves 3 militants killed, two soldiers injured | | | Early Times Reporter Srinagar | Jan 21 36 hours long gun battle at Mandigam Handwara ended this morning with the killing of all the three holed up militants and injuries to Two soldiers. Police sources quoting SP Handwara, Dr Haseeb Mugal, told KMT that on 19.01.08, a specific information was received by Police Handwara regarding presence of three Lashker-e-Toiba militants in the area of village Mandigam Handwara and in reaction to it a joint operation was launched by Police and troops of 30 RR and 22 RR during the intervening night of 19/20.01.08. The security forces cops put entire Mandigam village under cordon and launched house to house searches, police said. During this operation, presence of three militants was established in the houses of Ashiq Hussain Parray, son of Ali Mohammad Parray and Mushtaq Ahmad Mir, son of Afzal Mir, resident of Parray Mohalla Mandigam. The SP said that the target house was completely zeroed-on and the action of trapped militants was closely monitored from very close distance to avoid their movement from one house to another and to avoid collateral damage. House to house searches were also made to ensure that no other militant had taken shelter or no civilian remained trapped inside any nearby house. He stated that the operation party asked the holed up militants to lay down their arms and ammunition but the trapped militants refused the offer of and fired indiscriminately upon them and injured one Sepoy of 30 RR, police said. The fire was equally retaliated resulting into a long fierce fire fight, which continued for the whole day and ended at about 0900 hours today. During the fire fight one Army office of 22 RR also got injured who was evacuated to treatment. Three AK 47 rifles, 10 AK magazines, 15 AK rounds and six hand grenades were recovered from the killed militants. The dead bodices of the militant have been handed over to the local Auqaf Committee of Handwara after completion of legal formalities for last rites. A Case FIR No. 02/08 under section 307 RPC, 7/27 Arms Act stands registered in Police Station Kralgund and has taken up investigations. |
