| Mideast peace process doesn't exist anymore: India | | |
Jerusalem, Aug 24 Disapproving the arrest of many elected Palestinian representatives and ministers by Israel, India has said the peace process does not exist anymore in the Middle East.
India's special envoy to West Asia, Chinmaya R Garekhan, who is on a 10-day visit to the region, met Palestinian Auhority President Mahmoud Abbas and Jordanian Foreign Minister Abdelelah Al-Khatib in Amman.
The visit, which followed the month-long bloody conflict between Israel and Hezbollah in Lebanon, "is meant to show solidarity with the Lebanese and Palestinians masses in their hour of crisis and also to form first hand impression and assessment of the situation," Gharekhan told PTI over phone from Amman today.
India has sent relief assistance to both Lebanon and the Palestinian Authority (PA).
Garekhan expressed concern over the deteriorating condition of the Palestinian masses and undermining of their democratically elected leadership.
"The peace process does not exist anymore. Israel has arrested so many elected Palestinian representatives and ministers which India thoroughly disapproves", he said. "India has also condemned the kidnapping of the Israeli soldier." During the meeting yesterday, Abbas expressed his deep appreciation for India's gesture towards Palestinian masses. "We are deeply moved and grateful for the assistance that India has given. It is typical to India. Whenever we are in difficulty it is always there for us," he told Garekhan.
Garekhan will also be visiting Lebanon and Syria this week. |
