| Pak opposition says disgraced scientist being "poisoned" | | | Islamabad, Aug 24 With government assuring all help for treatment of disgraced nuclear scientist A Q Khan who is suffering from prostate cancer, Pakistan's opposition parties have charged that he was being "poisoned" and demanded that a Parliamentary delegation be allowed to visit him.
In the National Assembly, the lower house of Pakistan's Parliament, members of Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) and Muttahida Majlis-e-Amal (MMA) expressed reservations over the government's claims that Khan, who confessed to have transferred sensitive nuclear technology to Iran, Libya and North Korea, was getting proper treatment.
"We fear that Dr A Q Khan is being poisoned. I want to bring our apprehensions on the record," Sahibzda Fazal Karim of PML-N was quoted as saying by 'Daily Times'.
Another PML-N member Tehmina Daultana asked the government to let the nuclear scientist receive treatment at the Shaukat Khanum Cancer Hospital, built by cricketer-turned politician Imran Khan in the memory of his mother.
Qazi Hussain Ahmed of MMA said he was not allowed to meet Khan when he went to his home. He said a serving army major told him that he had to get permission from the "higher authorities" first.
The opposition members demanded that the government allow a delegation of Parliamentary leaders to visit the ailing scientist. |
