| Azad may eventually be PCC chief | | | Early Times Reporter Jammu | Jan 21 Peerzada is out for now and deciding on a new organizational chief in the election year may be serious task –eventually the Congress high command may crown the Chief Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad with the additional responsibility of the Pradesh Congress Committee President. Sources in the Congress circles said that the party high command is reluctant to choose any PCC president out of the available options when the party is all set to go for elections. In fact, even before his falling into the hot frying pan of corruption allegations, Peerzada's removal as PCC chief was due but the only delay was a consensus over a new face which, however, still eludes. Sources said that at one point of time Peerzada had been asked to step down to give way for a new PCC chief but stuck to the chair. The Congress high command has since for a year now considering options for a new PCC chief as the leadership was seized of the fact that the organization was not able sell the Chief Minister's development story to the people. In fact over past one year, the Chief Minister himself had to perform the responsibilities of organizations. A Congress leader said, "when controversy broke out between PDP and our party over the issue of demilitarization, it was the responsibility of the party to defend the Chief Minister on his view points. The party could never do that and eventually the Chief Minister had to be at defensive each time". In fact the massive development plan which the Chief Minister has been carrying our could not be sold to the people at the grassroots level while the PDP's organizational capabilities did well all this time. There are strong indications that the Congress high command may handover the responsibilities of the PPC chief to the Chief Minister till next elections are held. "Choosing a PCC chief at this stage means a lot of changes, either in the government or in the organizational set up", said a Congress leader who indicated that Azad himself may be the final choice of the high command. It may be seen in this background that the Pradesh unit of the Youth Congress has urged Congress President Sonia Gandhi to appoint Chief Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad as President of the Pradesh Congress Committee . "We urged AICC President and UPA Chairperson Sonia Gandhi to appoint Ghulam Nabi Azad as JKPCC Chief keeping in view the recent political developments in the state", Jammu and Kashmir Pradesh Youth Congress (JKPYC) Chief and MLA, Mohammad Amin Bhat said. The decision to support the candidature of Azad for the post was taken unanimously by the JKPYC at its meeting here, Bhat said. |
