| Seminar on 'Crime against Women' at JU | | | Early Times Reporter Jammu | Jan 23 Government would appoint chairperson for J&K State Women Commission (SWC) in the near future to make it more vibrant and effective stated Minister for Social Welfare. Abdul Gani Vakil today. He said the institution has a vital role in safeguarding the interests of women especially in the present milieu when the society is witnessing alarming increase in gender atrocities in the shape of rapes, dowry deaths, etc. He was addressing a seminar, 'Crime against Women' organized by State Women Commission at Jammu University. Minister of State for Social Welfare Mr. G. M. Saroori, Vice Chancellor Jammu University Mr. Amitabh Mattoo, Secretary SW C Hafeeza Muzaffar, Professors and students were present on the occasion. The Minister said that women have to take on culprits indulging in committing atrocities against them themselves by showing confidence and determination. In this pursuit, he said they need to come out of inferiority complex, and strive for education and economic emancipation. Calling for channelizing talent of women on a wider canvas, the Minister said that both government and society need to work in tandem for providing equal opportunities of development to them. Nature has endowed equal capabilities to both men and women, he added. Vakil suggested women to guard their modesty while venturing into various fields of life, stating that crime incidents against women could be contained to a large extent if they dress and behave properly; adding wearing of scanty and improper dresses increases their vulnerability. In his speech, Saroori called for spreading awareness regarding various welfare schemes launched by the government for upliftment of women. He said empowerment of women was necessary to hold crime onslaught against them. Speaking on the occasion, Amitabh Mattoo assured government of full cooperation of the University and its Women Development Centre in all those activities aimed at socio-economic betterment of women. He appreciated the participants for expressing brilliant ideas in the symposium. He said rising incidents of atrocities against women particularly in metropolitan cities was a common serious concern. Later, the Ministers gave away prizes to best speakers. |
