Early Times Report

SRINAGAR, Mar 9: Normal work was affected at Government Dental College (GDC), Srinagar as the students proceeded on an indefinite strike against the college administration for their failure to take action against one of the faculty members.
Reports said that scores of students of GDC Srinagar assembled in the college campus and sat on dharna in protest against the college administration. The students also voiced their anger against the Health and Medical Education (H&ME) department for their failure to act against one of the faculty members of the college.
Students raised slogans against the college administration and alleged that the people at helm in the college are adopting a non-serious approach towards the issues being faced by them. They were carrying banners and placards in their hands and demanded swift action against the faculty member.
The students were protesting against the Head of Department (HOD) Orthodontia, Professor Mohammad Mushtaq Najar who had allegedly slapped a Post Graduate (PG) student of the department after he refused to carry out the job assigned to him by the HOD. The student was initially manhandled by the HOD and later on beaten up in presence of other students. Prof Najar is a member of State Dental Council.
The incident took place in the first week of January and since then the students of department of Orthodontia are on strike. They are demanding action against the HOD Orthodontia saying that the students are not expected to do 'menial' jobs of their guide. Prof Najar is the guide of at least six students of the department of Orthodontia. The students of department of Orthodontia were joined by the students of other departments at the college.
It would be in place to mention here that Commissioner Secretary, Health and Medical Education (H&ME) department, Pawan Kotwal in his visit to the college told the protesting students they should do the menial jobs of their guide as there is nothing bad in it. The protesting students termed the statement of Kotwal as disgusting and insulting.
The protesting students said that they have virtually lost hope with the system since the Principal Government Dental College, Srinagar; Dr. Reyaz Farooq has failed to take instant action against the guide. The students said that the state government has failed to act in the matter adding that health minister Bali Bhagat should intervene immediately.
Ever since the episode has taken place the protesting students have not attended to clinics and college. They have already presented the video clips and other material against Prof. Najar to the enquiry committee set up by the college authorities to look into the matter. Prof. Mushtaq is very close to Principal GDC, Srinagar.
It has been learnt from sources that in the past many allegations were leveled against the HOD Orthodontia. However, all the charges against Prof. Mushtaq were dropped since he and the Principal GDC Srinagar influenced the concerned stakeholders not to take action.
