Bashir Ahmad, the top commander of Harkat-ul-Jihadi Islami (HuJI) and wanted in many blast cases in Uttar Pradesh as well, was Friday killed in a shootout with security forces in a village in Kishtwar district of Jammu and Kashmir.
Farooq Khan, Deputy Inspector General of Police (Doda range) said: "Bashir was the most wanted terrorist in Uttar Pradesh and the rest of India."
He said Bashir was behind many bombings in Uttar Pradesh and Jammu and Kashmir.
The police tracked down Bashir to his hideout in Chatroo area, located at an altitude of more than 8,000 feet. The militant was killed after a brief shootout with security forces.
Bashir was currently the supreme commander of HuJI and was involved in training and recruiting militants in Uttar Pradesh's Faizabad and Varanasi areas. He himself was trained in Pakistan and Afghanistan, police officials said.
