| Is Azad unsafe? | | | Early Times Reporter Jammu | Jan 25 In a major development, following intelligence inputs suggesting danger to the life of Chief Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad, a complete overhaul has been carried out in his security grid as an insider was reportedly in collusion with some saboteurs. One security official has been called for questioning by the authorities while 12 persons are reported to have been removed from the Chief Minister's security. The officials were in the orbit of doubt and were shifted after a keen surveillance of their activities. Those shifted included telephone operators, gardeners, attendants, supervisors and security staffers, they said, adding this has been done following threats by militants to target the Chief Minister. All telephones and mobile calls at Azad's residence are being monitored, they said, adding the multi-ringed security of the Chief Minister has been further beefed up under a Deputy Inspector General (DIG). The security staffer, who has been quizzed for leaking information about Azad's security, is also being questioned for his links with a militant outfit, they said. Besides providing a cover of elite NSG commandos, the state police has also reportedly carried out a major overhaul of Azad's security by replacing the present Special Services Group (SSG) by those personnel who excel in close combat. The SSG of the state police, which is in charge of security of the Chief Minister and other important state leaders, have to undergo a rigorous training under National Security Guard (NSG). The changes in Azad's security come in the wake of several intelligence inputs on threats from Pakistan-based Lashkar-e-Toiba and Jaish-e-Mohammed that they would carry out a suicide attack on Azad and National Conference leader Omar Abdullah, who has been holding several roadside meetings in the recent months. Security forces had arrested a Border Security Force Jawan in September last year for allegedly claiming in his telephonic conversations with Lashkar commanders that he could be of help in carrying out any plan to target the Chief Minister. |
