| JKFA delighted over recognition to football | | | Sanjeev Sharma Jammu | Jan 27 Delighted over recognition to the popular game of football in the shape of state awards to Arun Malhotra and Mehraj-u-Din Wadoo, the Jammu and Kashmir Football Association (JKFA) feels that the honour will go a long way in encouraging soccer in otherwise backwards Jammu and Kashmir in sports. These two ace footballers were among three outstanding sportspersons awarded this year’s state sports awards on Republic Day by the state government. The Award includes a citation and Rs 51,000 cash prize. “Finding berth in the Indian football team is in itself an achievement, especially for boys from the state of Jammu and Kashmir. When such distinction gets recognition back home, it really gives one immense satisfaction,” general secretary of the JKFA, Bashir Malik told Sports & Allied News. While ONGC staffer, Arun of Jammu is a silver medalist in the Afro-Asian Games, his counterpart from Srinagar, Wadoo is part of the present Indian team and plays for East Bengal. Both these star performers have made a room for themselves at the national scene with their sheer hardwork, determination and high ambitions. “What the duo of Arun and Wadoo has achieved is undoubtedly because of their own efforts. Bestowing honour on them further strengthened their bond of relationship with the state they belongs to,” maintained Malik. It was football, which got the first state sports award when former India captain, Abdul Majid Kakroo was nominated for the honour five years back. “There is no denying the fact that honour and recognition at right time plays a big role in making a sportsperson a great player. I’m sure awards to Arun and Wadoo would certainly encourage other two boys from the state to attain their ultimate goal of making it to the Indian squad,” said the general secretary. Other two boys at present playing at the national level are Ishfaq Ahmed and Johny Sharma. While Ishfaq plays for Mohan Bagan, Johny has already represented India in under-13 year age group and now he is part of the under-14 national team. |
