Braving chilly winds and minus 10 degree temperature, the Indian-I team clinched the Indo-Canadian Friendship Ice Hockey Cup by defeating Canadian High Command team by 4 goals to 2 at the final match played at the world famous Ice Hockey Rinks at Leh in Ladakh region today.
The 17-member Ice Hockey Team of Canadian High Commission at New Delhi had arrived Leh on January 25. However, the team from Japan, who was also to take part in the Championship, could not make it due to snowfall and cancellation of flights.
The Indian team was led by Tsering Sangay, while Ken Macartny Deputy High Commissioner of Canadian Embassy in New Delhi led his team.
Unmindful of chilly winds and minus 10 degree temperate, thousands of people, including Chief Executive Councilor LAHDC Chhering Dorje and Deputy Commissioner Ladakh witnessed the match played at Karzoo Rink.
Thupstan Chewang, Member Parliament, who was the chief guest on the occasion expressed his happiness over Leh gaining momentum in sports activities and said that the entire desert region is gifted with Ice Hockey Rinks near river, streams and irrigation water pools. He urged upon the youth to take maximum benefits of these natural facilities at the primary stage.
Thupstan said 130 kanals of land has been allotted to Ladakh Winter Sports Club for construction of an Ice-Hokey Rink of International Standard and added that government is also constructing an Ice Hockey Rink at Sports Stadium at Skayachahs. Once these Ice Rinks are completed and commissioned, national and international level winter games could be played in Leh, he said.
Appreciatating the Canadian team’s visit to Leh and playing for this Cup, he said their visit has encouraged the velour of Ladakhi winter-sports lovers.
Giving away the Cup, Thupstan congratulated the India-I team for its splendid performance. The team consisted of Ladakhi players drawn from different Ice Sports Clubs.
President Ladakh Winter Sports Club, P T Kunzang, who also spoke on the occasion, said that Jammu and Kashmir Winter Games Association has invited Ladakhi Ice Hockey team for participating in the National Winter Games to be played at Gulmarg next month. He said 42 players are to be selected to participate in Ice-Hockey, Figure Skating and Speed Skating.
