| PDP TO LAUNCH FRESH MEMBERSHIP DRIVE | | |
Srinagar, Aug 24: In a bid to consolidate Party's base in the region, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) is going for a membership drive by the end of this month in Kashmir Valley, and in the first week of September in Jammu province. President of PDP Ms Mehbooba Mufti will herself launch the state-wide membership drive in presence of PDP ministers, legislators and party cadres during a function in Srinagar on 31, August, said a statement issued by PDP here on Thursday. Party leadership has asked its cadres to gear up for what it considers massive exercise so as to disseminate the policies and programmes of the party to the grassroots levels across the entire state, the statement said. The USP ( Unique Selling Proposition) of the membership drive will be the "achievements made at political, administrative and developments fronts during the Mufti Mohammad Sayeed led coalition government till November 2005". Pertinent to mention here that the PDP recently established its units in Kargil district of mountainous Ladakh region and plans to expand its base there in the entire region soon. PDP, which was formed on July 28, 1999 is a seven-year old regional party, and it has 17 members in the present J&K Legislative Assembly while as seven in the Legislative Council. In the last Assembly elections held in October 2002 PDP got 16 seats, which was a surprise for all mainstream political parties–especially the largest mainstream group National Conference presided over by Omar Abdullah. The key coalition partner of the present Congress led government, PDP's relationship with the partner are by no means goody goody.
About the resolution of Kashmir conundrum PDP advocates self-rule and demilitarization proposals while Congress believes the state already enjoys the self-rule. On many occasions in the past nearly four years it was felt the fissures in the coalition will result in collapse of the government but somehow the weak thread stays in contact.
