| Of missing Gushtaba and Rs 7 lakh daily loss | | | Early Times Reporter Jamm | Feb 1 If you are a vegetarian then proceed to the next story, this is not for you. However, if you eat meat then proceed with reading and think over switching over to the vegetarian lifestyle as Maneka Gandhi wants you to. Jammu and Kashmir despite one of the best locations for sheep breeding and one of the highest meat consuming states is also one of the biggest importer of sheep. We are not sure whether Animal Husbandry Minister Taj Mohiuddin is aware of it or not but the fact remained that local sheep production does not cater to even ten per cent of the total average meat requirements. Therefore, the sheep have to exported majorly from Gujarat, besides other states, and they reach us through a well established trading network country's one of biggest sheep markets in Delhi. However, the sheep traders in Delhi have for past some time been striking and shutting down their outlets frequently owing to the pressure mounted by the brigade of animal lovers led by environmentalist Maneka Gandhi. Leave aside whether you eat meat or not. Menaka Gandhi's obsession with the animals is costing the Jammu and Kashmir exchequer by around Rs seven lakhs every day. You must be surprised that on a daily average Jammu and Kashmir imports around 20,000 animals for meet requirements. At the Lakhanpur toll post, the state government charges Rs 35 per animal (sheep). The daily aggregate of tax collection on sheep import at Lakhanpur would work out to Rs seven lakhs –Rs 2.10 Crores month. Then there is another embargo which has been put by Maneka Gandhi and her supporters. Maneka wants the Delhi sheep market to export a maximum of only 250 to 300 sheep to the traders of Jammu and Kashmir. By any estimate this can not meet the need of any small locality even. The standoff is continuing between the Peoples For Animals –the organization of Maneka Gandhi and Delhi sheep traders. With no effective intervention from Jammu and Kashmir government or the Delhi government, the traders have now refused to budge before the pressure and have gone on an indefinite strike. For last several days there is no sheep supply to Jammu and Kashmir. While the meat eaters of missing the Gushtaba on their platter, the state government is loosing Rs seven lakhs every day. |
