| Renowned HR activist Showkat accorded warm reception at airport | | ‘Plans to interact with cross sections, PoK migrants’ | | Early Times Reporter Jammu | Feb 2 A renowned Human Right Activist and Chairman Peoples National Party, Sardar Showkat Ali, who arrived here today from Delhi was accorded warm reception by a large number of his friends and well wishers led by Tahir Hassem Manhas, a noted human rights activist, at the airport. Originally hailing from Trad Khal in PoK, Sardar Showkat is based in Bern Switzerland for the last seven years. A true nationalist, Showkat has been championing the cause of united Jammu and Kashmir including Gilgit, Baltistan, the erstwhile state of Maharaja of Jammu and Kashmir as it existed in 1947. A stanch secularist S. Showkat has had his studies in Karachi University where remained in close contact with leaders like Gous Bakash Bienjo, Dr Ajaz NAZIR, Jam Saqi, Prof Jamal Naqvi. A firm believer of non-violence and winner of Gandhi Peace Award, Showkat had been opposing the gun culture in Jammu and Kashmir from the day one. He was arrested in PoK for his liberal and nationalist outlook and was released by the establishment following pressure by the Amnesty International and other Human Rights Organizations. After laving Pakistan he took asylum in Switzerland where he has been living for the last seven years. Sardar Showkat visited Kashmir Valley in June 2006 and documented his tour diary in the shape of a book written in Urdu ‘ Yaadon Ki Sogaat’, which was subsequently translated into English under the title’ Down the Memory Lane’. Showkat is expected to stay in the winter capital for a few days and plans to interact with different shades of polity including politicians, intellectuals and journalists apart from migrants from Mirpur, Poonch, Muzafferabad and Kotli area of PoK. |
