| Sports Awards: Surinder’s village `unhappy’ | | | arly Times Reporter Jammu | Feb 2 Taking a dig at what government has done while selecting the players for the state sports award, the people of Raya Suchaini in Vijaypur have expressed their displeasure over ignoring the only international cricketer from the state, Surinder Singh Bagal for the top honour. “The village Raya Suchaini not only gave the country proud and well decorated soldiers but sportspersons like Surinder Singh Bagal, who represented the nation as a pace bowler against cricket champion Australia and England,” told Sarpanch of Bagla Panchyat in Raya Suchaini, Yogeshwar Singh in an interaction with Sports & Allied News, here today. “Surprisingly, when the time came for recognition, the state forgot the contributions of Surinder Singh and in turn rewarded one who never represented the state in first class cricket even at the zonal level,” he maintained. Pleading Surinder’s case Lambardar of the same panchyat, Balbir Singh said that such action on part of the government has not only upset the player but also discouraged those who follow the footprints of Bagal from the village. “It is my request to those at the helm of affairs to please look into Surinder’s distinctive achievements and recommend his name for next year’s state sports award correcting their mistake,” said Balbir. |
