Fresh snowfall closes Srinagar-Jammu highway
2/3/2008 10:04:10 PM
Early Times Reporter
Srinagar | Feb 3
Fresh snowfall across the Kashmir Valley Sunday closed the strategic Srinagar-Jammu highway even though the residents here experienced a relief from bone chilling cold.
Authorities closed the 300-km long highway because of the heavy snowfall in the Jawahar Tunnel area of the road.
The minimum temperature recorded in summer capital Srinagar Sunday was minus 0.6 degrees Celsius. On Saturday it was minus 6.6 degrees.
The rise in mercury is attributed to the snowfall, which the valley has been witnessing since early Sunday.
'The spell of extreme cold has been broken because of the cloud cover which preceded the snowfall,' said T.K. Jotshi, assistant director of weather office here.
'Moderate to heavy snowfall across the valley is expected to occur during the next two days (Monday and Tuesday). This is because of a Western disturbance that has reached here now.'
