India, Pak youth throw ideas to strengthen ties
2/3/2008 10:13:01 PM
NEW DELHI | Feb 3
Demilitarisation of border, free trade and formation of joint cricket team -- these are some of the suggestions from youth of India and Pakistan for forging friendship between the two countries.
Coming together to exchange ideas on how the relations between the two countries can be strengthened, a few young minds from India and Pakistan concluded that dependence on each other and people-to-people contacts needed to be increased to achieve it.
"Barriers break when people talk and this way we can bring peace and progress which will be in the best interests of both the nations," said Mehr Toor, final year Economics student at the Lahore University of Management Studies, summing up the essence of the deliberations.
Toor was among a group of 10 students from Pakistan universities who had two-day interaction with their 30 counterparts from across India.
Toor felt that the only way to bring peace between the two "brotherly" countries was to increase their dependence on each other.
"And also, NGOs, universities and other educational institutions and the media in India and Pakistan can bring the people of both the nations closer to each other as we have common challenges like poverty and illiteracy," she said.
Sharing Toor's views, Bhavna Kaura, a Commerce student of Kamala Nehru College in Amritsar, wondered: "Why can't the people who speak the same language and share the same culture and heritage come together?"
