Uproar, adjournment in RS over Azhar, Mah. Muslim policemen issues
8/25/2006 7:42:33 PM

New Delhi, Aug 25 Rajya Sabha was adjourned twice during Zero Hour today following uproar on two separate issues including former J and K chief Minister Farooq Abdullah's statement on Jaish-e-Mohammed (JEM) chief Masood Azhar's release and that of three Muslim policemen being ordered to shave off their beards in Maharashtra.

As soon as the Zero Hour started, Congress members were on their feet waving copies of an interview that the former Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister had given to a weekly magazine holding former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee and Deputy Prime Minister L K Advani responsible for JEM chief Maulana Masood Azhar's release in exchange of passengers of the hijacked Indian Airlines plane IC-814 in Kandahar.

Simultaneously SP members wanted to raise the issue of three Muslim policemen in Beed district of Maharashtra having been ordered to shave off their beards.

The SP members waved the copies of the newspaper in which the report had appeared.

Congress member Rajiv Shukla told reporters outside the House that they had given a notice about a discussion on the issue of Masood Azhar in the morning.

SP Member Abu Azimi also told reporters that they had given a notice on the issue three days back. But when Mr S S Ahluwalia of the BJP yesterday raised the matter of forced haircut of a Sikh Youth in Jaipur, the SP also decided to raise the matter.

Members of the two Parties were simultaneously demanding that they be allowed to raisse the matter first. The uproar continued for five minutes after which Chairman Bhairon Singh Shekhawat adjourned the House for 25 minutes.

After the House re-assembled at 1230 Hours, the members again raised the issues.

Vice Chairman Kalraj Mishra, who was in the Chair at that time, adjourned the House till 1400 Hrs.
