| J&K chill worst in 45 years | | Snow alert sounded in Valley, NH remains closed | | Early Times Reporter Jammu | Feb 5 As the chill maintains across the state and temperatures continue to dip, the whether experts say that Jammu and Kashmir is passing through the lowest temperatures of past 45 years. The present extremely cold weather coupled with rains and snowfall in the upper reaches is likely to continue for sometime. Meanwhile, in a grim reminder of the devastating snow Tsunami of 2005 which took more than 200 lives in the state, the authorities have sounded a snow alert in Kashmir Valley. The troops and other people have warned against avalanches, particularly along the National Highway and around the areas of Jawahar tunnel. As a fall out of the worsening weather, the Srinagar-Jammu National Highway remained closed for the third successive day. Traffic on the 300-km arterial road, the only surface link between the valley and the rest of the country, remain closed for third consecutive day on Tuesday, a spokesman of the traffic department said. The traffic on the highway was suspended Sunday following landslides at Panthal and heavy accumulation of snow at Patnitop and Jawahar Tunnel, the gateway to Kashmir. The spokesman said accumulation of snow at Jawahar Tunnel has blocked the highway. The snowfall which lashed the valley over past three days also triggered landslides at Panthal, 140 kms from Srinagar. A portion of the road at Panthal is recurring problem for traffic as stones come rolling down on the road from the mountain. Qazigund, Batote, Banihal and Patnitop on the highway recorded 21.8 M m , 19.6 and 13.2 M m of snowfall respectively till 0830 hours, the spokesman said, adding most parts of Jammu region also experienced rains and snow with Jammu city recording 8.8 M m of rains till 0830 hours. Bhaderwah in Kishtwar district recorded 28.4 M m of snow while Katra, the base camp for Vaishnodevi temple recorded 10.9 M m of rains till 0830 hours, he said. Srinagar also experienced heavy snowfall since last night. The city which recorded the lowest temperature of minus 0.2 received 14.5 M m of snow till 0830 hours when it was still snowing. Kupwara in north Kashmir was the coldest place in the valley with minimum temperature dipping to minus 4.7 degree Celsius. Pahalgam hill resort also registered minus 1.8 and Kokernag minus 1.7 degree Celsius, the spokesman said. |
