| In absence of facilities, patients move outside state for haemophilia tests | | World Haemophilia Day | | Early Times Report
Jammu, Apr 17: While World Haemophilia Day is observed across the globe to increase awareness about the disease and other inherited bleeding disorders, the patients of Jammu are virtually forced to move outside the state to get haemophilia test done in the absence of testing machine.
Haemophilia is an uncommon genetic bleeding disorder that disrupts the blood clotting process. There are more than 400 registered haemophiliacs in Jammu, while there are only few treatment centres in the entire state. With the result, patients have to travel a lot for factor infusion.
An official in the GMC Jammu hospital told Early Times that irked by the callous attitude of the Health Department towards the haemophiliacs, the J&K High Court had pulled it up and directed it to keep all facilities as well as factor available round the clock in the hospital. The concerned authorities however disobeyed the court ruling.
The machine for checking haemostasis system is not expensive and costs between Rs 2 Lakh to Rs 3 lakh, but due to lack of seriousness the concerned authority has never demanded and projected the same before the parental departments.
"It is very unfortunate that despite having funds, no efforts were made to provide better care to patients who are suffering from this deadly disease," the official said. A member of the Haemophilia Society alleged that all patients are being neglected by the authorities. Those who are suffering from the disease have to return disappointed from hospitals as lack of required factor can complicate their disease anytime. "The administration of GMC hospital as well SMGS hospital Jammu have given step motherly treatment to the patients," the official added. "Many times requisitions were sent to the authorities concerned for lifesaving drugs for the treatment of these patients but they have not received timely treatment." |
