| Instead of contest BJP for consensus on BJP Chief | | | Jammu,August 25 :-Two senior BJP leaders,Mr O.P.Kohli,and Mr Manohar Lal reviewed, during their visit to the state’s winter capital, the progress the state unit of the party had achieved in the enrolement of new members and the ongoing organizational election process. A senior party leader said that “the two leaders had a detailed discussion with the members of the committees constituted for enrolling new members, for their verification and for setting the stage for the organizational election. Party sources said that despite the fact that there were more than three senior BJP leaders, including Prof. Chaman Lal Gupta,a former Minister of state for defence,Mr Kavinder Gupta,a former Mayor of the Jammu Municipal Corporation, and Mr Ashok Khajuria,General secretary,in the race for presidentship an attempt would be made for a consensus candidate thereby avoiding a contest. The sources said that “let us first finish the election at the block and district level and then we will think of choosing a leader through consensus who could be installed as President of the BJP.” Asked who would make the exercise for preventing a contest the sources said that senior party leaders, including Dr Nirmal Singh, present BJP Chief,Mr Parmanand,a former Haryana Governor,Mr D.K.Kotwal,a former BJP Chief, would be assisted by a couple of senior party leaders from Delhi inselecting a leader through consensus. When asked whether the party avoided to hold a contest so as to prevent yet another split the BJP sources said “we are not afraid of facing a contest among several leaders for the party’s Presidentship. We do not want to leave a trail of bitterness. The BJP is free of factionalism because the choice for Presidentship has been through consensus in the past.
