Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) resident and Member Parliament Ms Mehbooba Mufti has asked the Government to extend all possible help to the people affected by the recent heavy snowfall in the State.
Interacting with deputations from various snow-affected areas of the Kashmir valley and Dachin, Marwa, Warwan and Padder areas of Kishtwar district here today, Ms Mufti said the Government must immediately release ex-gratia relief to the next of the kin who lost their lives in the calamity. "Cash relief must also be provided to the families whose livestock and properties including residential houses got damaged due to the snowfall," she said and added that most of the affected people belong to the remote areas of the State living in highly impoverished conditions.
Expressing shock and grief over the loss of many precious lives in the natural calamity, Ms Mufti said the Government of India must release special funds to the State to reach out to the sufferers. She said the areas that have suffered extensive damage due to the heavy snowfall must be given free rations and other commodities as most of their stocks have perished. She said there are reports that scores of orchards in various areas have suffered extensive damage due to the snowfall. She said as the extent of damages is still not known due to heavy snowfall, an exhaustive survey of the same must be conducted by the concerned authorities to ensure long-term rehabilitation of the affected people.
The PDP President asked the Government to arrange airlifting facilities for the stranded passengers of the remote area like Dachin, Warwan, Marwa and Padder also so that they can reach their homes. She said rations must be airdropped in the areas that are completely cut-off due to the snow.
M Mufti said that the Government must ensure minimum disruption of electricity and drinking water facilities in the Valley as otherwise people would be put to lot of difficulties due to biting cold. She said adequate arrangements must be made to ensure LPG, Kerosene and rations in the snow-bound areas of the valley and parts of Jammu region.
Stressing the need for construction of alternate road connectivity to the Kashmir valley, Ms Mufti said the frequent closure of the Srinagar-Jammu highway has become a pestering problem and the Government must speed up the construction of Mughal Road so that an alternate connectivity link is available to the Valley.
Ms Mufti said the Government functionaries must remain present in the affected areas to monitor the situation and ensure that the people are not put to any trouble.
Meanwhile, PDP leaders Mohammad Sartaj Madni, Peerzada Mansoor Hussain and Sayed Asghar Hussain have also expressed shock and grief over the loss of lives due to the snowfall and have demanded immediate relief to the affected families. They have also demanded free rations for the areas that are worst affected by the snowfall.
