| PDP for productive role to State’s youth: Mehbooba | | Suggests creation of state level youth council | | Early Times Reporter Udhampur | Feb 10 Reiterating her party’s resolve of offering the youth a greater voice in political decision making to make them equal partners in initiating programs aiming at the welfare of the younger generation, Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) President Mehbooba Mufti said the party is in the process of devising sustainable strategies to support them in developing their potential and giving them greater responsibility in decision making process. Addressing a day-long convention of the party's youth wing here today, Mehbooba said through its Youth Development Policy, PDP has already envisioned a productive role for the State's youth, which would be further concretized through various practical future initiatives. "PDP believes that the youth of Jammu and Kashmir have the right to seek meaningful employment, freedom of expression, participation in decision-making that affects their lives, and protection from socio-economic and political manipulation," she said and added that the party would strive towards realizing this objective for the State's emancipated young population. Mufti said the PDP has a unique correlation with the youth as the party itself is young and growing. "We understand and identify better with the problems of our young population as we, as a party are ourselves, young and growing with them," she said and added that the youth in Jammu and Kashmir need extraordinary attention as they have been particularly and enormously affected by the negative consequences of the conflict and economic deprivation. In order to avoid a further deterioration of the situation for the coming generations, she said the State's political leadership needs to respect and ensure the rights of its youth. "This requires a determined effort of lending economical, social and political support to the young people, both men and women equally," she maintained. Expressing concern over the magnitude and disproportionate effect of unemployment and underemployment upon youth and its profound implications for the future of our society, Mufti said the Government must consider youth employment as integral to its overall strategies for development and collective security, and within this context give renewed attention to ensure decent and productive work for the State's young people. Stressing the need for improving education, training, mobility, vocational integration and entrepreneurship of young people, she suggested creation of a State Level Youth Council that would be mandated with the coordination of the youth organizations, formulating a State-level Youth Policy and developing an integrated State-specific youth development program. She also suggested setting up of a task force in the Department of Youth Affairs to ensure that the policies targeted at youth are effectively implemented. PDP leaders Dhaman Bhasin, Shanti Devi, Rajesh Bhatt, Bashir Assad and Sukhdev Sharma were among others present on the occasion. |
