The sun is back, the snow will soon be over, the Jammu and Kashmir Police will be remembered for ever for its courageous rescue operations and sympathetic approach to the people trapped in difficult situations.
Realizing its obligations as the custodians of the life and property of the people, the Jammu and Kashmir Police helped and rescued scores of the distressed people who were caught in the cruel hands of the snow and snow avalanches following a heavy snow fall in the valley a couple of days ago.
When it was snowing very heavily Police not only reached to the people who were trapped in different hamlets over different ridges in the Waltengo Nad, where snow storm killed 190 people in 2005,but also ferried the pregnant ladies to the nearby hospitals.
Since the fury of snow was severe in the South Kashmir, the police officers and the officials manning the police establishments focused all their resources for saving the lives of the people.
Kulgam Police in whose jurisdiction Waltengoo Nad falls remained extra cautious.A police team headed SHO Qazigund Riyaz Ahmed camped at Kond Nobug which is the centreal village of of the 13 villages cluster falling in Waltengoo Nad.
The police team with the help of some village volunteers and a social worker Javeed Asad and a local teacher master Bashir were able to save more than 200 lives during the three dreadful days of February 6,7 and 8.
On February 06, 2008 police got the information that about a dozen families were trapped North east of Waltengoo NadThe hamlet known a Marasi Nala is about four and half kilometers from Kralu Kond .The police team started its journey towards the hamlet at 09 o clock in the morning and reached the affected families at quarter past 01 in the after noon making a passage of about four and a half kilometer in the 11 feet high snow.
Police team was able to bring along with them 60 people of 12 families.On the same evening team rushed to the Panjgam Nad which is on another ridge hamlet of the Waltengoo Nad.Here 62 people of eight families were rescued.
In the intervening night of February 6 and 7, as expected avalanches struck Marsi Nalla.On February 7, 62 people were rescued from Andernad comprising 15 families and on February 08, 2008 34 members of seven families of Gujjar pati Gulab Bagh were rescued.One person died over here.
Similarly Pulwama police rescued 13 families from different villages of Kellar, Rajpora, Zainpora and Shopian areas. One family each was rescued from Abhama ,Therana, Vishnu, in Kellar area while eight families were rescued from Krach Patri and two families from alora and Urpora Nagbal villages of Zaianpora area. Police men from rajpora police station handed over three ladies which were trapped in snow to there families. Not only was this medicine also distributed in about 50 persons in Shopian.
Pulwama police shifted two patients including a pregnant lady namely Haseena wife of Gulzar Ahanger resident of Rajpora to the hospital. As has been already reported one pregnant lady delivered in gypsy of Pahalgam police when she was being taken to hospital.
Recognizing the good work done by the police in the south Kashmir Director General of police sanctioned cash award of Rs 50,000 each twice last week to boost the morale of the police men fighting snow for a change.
